Frosted plastic from the shade down the neck, so the light comes out even and white with no hot spot in it. In a dark room, the shade is the lamp. At the foot is a heavy concrete dome with the transformer inside it, so it doesn't move once it's placed. It's dated July 2004 on the underside, from the four years when everything on a desk was translucent and hummed a little.
